I'm up late working, and the later it gets, the slower I work and the more I procrastinate. So forgive me if I go on some more about H50 1.09

H50 1.09

So after the tv reception problems I described here, I actually did go back and re-watch it in pure, clear, iTunes color.

And so I can confirm that even on a second viewing, I still found the final scene between Steve and Danny just--*meep*--Steve being all hurt and stoic and Danny wanting to cheer him up....I see all kinds of h/c codas to the ep. have been posted, and that makes me very happy.

Here are the things I missed because my reception was so dark and grainy:

*The assassin having a garrote in her bra strap. Nifty!

*All the visual details of what was an awesome action scene of the team under siege in Steve's house. You tell me: did he have a plan for what to do if the house was attacked already in place--because that's just the kind of guy he is? Or did he improvise the whole thing on the spot, because that's just the kind of guy he is?

*most importantly, the knife sheathed in the back of Steve's vest. Really, I totally missed it--I thought he was going hand-to-hand with Nick in the beach fight the first time I watched. But--man! *fans self* I've always liked Peter Burke's shoulder holster, and 2014!Dean's thigh holster is pretty damn hot--but I'm beginning to think that when it comes to, well, strap-ons, Steve McGarrett might have them both beat. If I had the capability, I would put together a pic-spam and poll.

(And, since you know I like to keep track of these things: more bad press for the iPhone 4, so easily cloned by the rogue security guy. Though I expect there's an app to protect you against that kind of thing, if only Steve had downloaded it)

And thank you everybody who confirmed for me that Steve does say he "worked the other side" and give Danny a little "I'll-never-tell" smile. Please, please let this be a Chekhovian gun on the mantelpiece: let it come down in the second half of the season and cause all kinds of action and angst.

Merlin 3.09

I really only have two things to say about this episode:

1. I usually try not to worry about things like character continuity in something like Merlin. But I have to say that after spending two and half seasons of the show impressing upon us that Arthur doesn't care about anything as much as he cares about Camelot (not his claim on the throne per se, but the well-being of the kingdom)--it was kind of jarring to hear him start talking about leaving Camelot so he could marry Gwen. The show often offers us Arthur's selfless love for his kingdom as his one redeeming feature, the thing that makes up for his arrogance and high-handedness, one thing that holds Merlin (and everyone else) to him--so without it, it does seem like he might just be a prat....Which I guess is another way of saying I have nothing against Arthur/Gwen, but their love doesn't seem epic or fiery enough to merit that kind of thing.

(Arthur of legend--and every popular re-telling of the story--sacrifices an adulterous Guenivere to hold Camelot together (even though the effort is doomed), and that made this version seem even more ridiculous).

2. However, I found old!Merlin way more fun that he had any right to be. Hee!

  • Avout "Merlin" - I have no idea what happes with this show, but I don't like it at all. It lacks almost everything I liked in this show now. Arthur isn't himself, the writers ruined Morgana for me (and ecause of it I can't ship Merlin/Morgana)... right now the thought that Gwaine will appear (I like to think that he will, it'd be awesome...) and Gaius will have more screentime keep me from quitting. I don't recognize my show anymore...

About HF0 - I still have to watch this episode XDDDD But I already can't wait! Sounds like fun! ^^
    • oh, I know, Merlin is very frustrating! I'm not sure I would watch it if my kids didn't enjoy it too--Gwaine is awesome, tho'--so at least something good has happened this season--

      H50 1.09 is extremely fun--I don't think you'll be disappointed!
  • You just know that Steve not telling is going to eat away at Danny, who is just not going to let it go... if I had the time there's a whole scene there with Danny making jokes about "is this your specialty?" when they're in bed together...

And what's with 'Smooth Dog'? I nearly spit my coffee at that point.

The knife thing is just... well, let's just say I already had a big thing for Steve in the tac vest and black T being all competently badass, and the knife thing just feeds my whole competence kink big time... :)

Finally, of course he already had a plan for the house, even if he hadn't conciously made one. You can't have his level of training and not be calculating the angles just as a matter of course.
    • if I had the time there's a whole scene there with Danny making jokes about "is this your specialty?" when they're in bed together...

ROFL! omg yes--this is so perfect!

"Smooth Dog" too! I so hope that comes back to haunt Steve! The writing in this episode was hysterical. I loved Steve saying "if we have to go to guns on this" and Danny calling him on it. And then his whole rant about military jargon was pure gold.

You know, I'd never seen the term "competence kink" until recently, but, yeah, I think I have one as big as Oahu--and this show just stokes it--

  • What I want to know is, WHERE WAS STEVE'S SISTER???? Did I miss something? Was there a throaway line at some point in the past that explained that she moved out again? Am I getting forgetful in my old age??

Also: Did Colin Morgan have fun playing old, or DID HE HAVE FUN playing old?? XD
    • Ps. Is that Alex O's neck?

(You know you have a problem when you can recognize random body parts...)
      • why yes it is *g* I dunno--necks and jawlines and mouths are very recognizable. Now if you're saying you can distinguish actors' feet....

(it's slightly more scary that I have quite a collection of neck icons of various people....)
    • He seemed to be having more fun than I'd ever seen him have before! (except when he jumped into that pile of hay with Gwaine)

Yeah--Steve's sister just seems to have stopped by for a couple of episodes to be a plot device, and then jetted off again. It's odd, because the show is quite tightly written, with a lot of continuity and references back to previous episodes...I think I read she'll be back, tho'

It would have been a hoot if she'd popped up during the shoot out, tho', in her pjs, saying "Steeeve--I thought we agreed that you weren't going to let anybody lay siege to the house this week--I have a date tonight, and I just finished getting the walls re-plastered from last time" *pouts*
      • Dude, I just realized that there needs to be a scene where Danny helps Steve do the necessary repairs after the gunfight!!!!
        • omg yes! yes there does. Though it turns out Steve's ideas about home decorating are just as precise as his ideas about everything else, and Danny wants to strangle him after being sent back to Home Depot for the umpteenth time to get the right kind of varnish :)
  • All the visual details of what was an awesome action scene of the team under siege in Steve's house. You tell me: did he have a plan for what to do if the house was attacked already in place--because that's just the kind of guy he is? Or did he improvise the whole thing on the spot, because that's just the kind of guy he is?

My suspicion would be, he's thought through just about every scenario that might happen, because that's how he's trained. There are two parts to being really good in LE or special ops: being prepared/having a plan, and being able to think on your feet (for when the plan gets FUBARed *g*).

So much happiness brought around by this show!
    • it seems to reliably bring the happy every week *hugs it*

You must be right--he probably unconsciously (or consciously) figures out the exit and defense strategies for any room he goes into--his poor house, tho'--
