Did I say last week I watched this show for the tackles? ‘Cause what I clearly meant to say was: I watch this show for the snuggles.

I mean both the physical snuggling – the shoulder squeezes and the forearm holds -- and the emotional snuggling – the “you okay?”s and the “c’mon, I’ll give you a ride”s and the “don’t move, I’ll be right there”s. Gets me right there, y’know?

Seriously, I wanted that scene with the five of them having dinner at the Hilton to go on forever – with Steve laughing and Danny putting his hands all over everyone and Rachel looking gorgeous. And that was even before I realized it was setting me up for the rest of the episode being really fucking sad.

I was already having trouble the whole plot of killing your children right in front of you. That was hard to watch once, let alone twice, and almost a third time. I mean trouble in the sense that it was genuinely painful to see, not that the show treated it particularly lightly. Still – ouch.

And then: poor Danny! With his story of how his brother sat with him every night for six months. And then having that same brother not just betray him, but betray Danny’s whole principle of family (his mother! His father! His sisters! His insanely adorable daughter! His fabulous ex-wife!). So sad—especially that scene at the end, which had a whole “Highway Patrolman” feeling about it….

(yes, I did think he was going to end up with Steve at the end—but I love Rachel, so I’m only a little bit miffed).

Other things, which didn’t really interfere with my fairly intense emotional reaction to the episode:

--it was a little weird that they used the same plot structure – the team dealing with the case and Danny dealing with an unrelated “family” issue – twice in three weeks…

--how did Danny find Matty there at the end?

--There was a lot of compromise going on: Danny risking charges to tell Matty the feds were after him; Steve lying for Danny’s sake.

Can’t wait to read the codas that come out of this one!

Southland 3.07, because I didn’t get around to it last week

--Sammy really needs to sit down with Sam Winchester and have a conversation about who gets to call you Sammy, and when. Which is to say: only your nearest and dearest and only in situations of extreme emotional intensity. Otherwise, it has a negative impact on your professional and personal authority. Just saying.

In other words: enough Sammy, already, ‘kay?

--I actually thought the episode was stolen by the guy playing the gunshot victim. He was wonderful, even if he did have to deal with my least favorite tv and fic cliché: the idea that a lovely guy like that would only have one connection in the world—a fiance—and since she was away would sit in a hospital facing death with only a police detective he’d just met to keep him company. Really? No parents? Family? Friends? Clergy? C’mon, Southland, where’s your usual realism?

(I think this must be purely personal, but I actually disagreed with Lydia. If I found out that someone I loved had delayed surgery that had even a small chance of saving their life just to say goodbye to me, I would be furious.)

--On a shallower note: I could have watched an whole episode of Ben unwrapping an ice cream with his mouth.

--Oh, and I almost forgot. Russell. I hate Russell. How could he do that to Lydia *hates*.

  • i felt so bad for danny in the episode! i also wanted danny to end up with steve at the end, but i do love rachel. i don't dislike/hate her character, so it didn't bother me that he did end up at her house.
    • I felt terrible for him! And the connection b/w him and Rachel was lovely all the way through the episode, so it made sense that he would go to her. Maybe Steve came over later, and they all got drunk, and Steve and Danny passed out in the living room, and watched cartoons with Grace in the morning.
  • --On a shallower note: I could have watched an whole episode of Ben unwrapping an ice cream with his mouth.

ROFL, I believe a lot of people said the same thing XD
I could have watched an whole episode for John being badass XDDD

My feelings about Russell are compromised ;_____; I'm still a little heartbroken because of it... ugh, I still want more scenes between him and Lydia, and I just need next episode now... _o_

    And I hould watch H50 1.18 XDD
    • oh, you should totally watch H50 1.18--that show goes right to the pleasure centers of the brain, even when it's sad!

It was pretty heartbreaking to see Lydia betrayed like that, by someone she felt really close, too. Her words and her restraint were perfect, tho' -- "I don't even know you." *sniff*
      • Already did! Ad I really want to hug Danny! Steve and Danny are currently my fouth favourite partnership when it comes to cop shows at the moemnt!

        Lydia needs more happiness after all this.... ;_;
  • Came over here for The Eagle stuff, but had to say, re: this,

(I think this must be purely personal, but I actually disagreed with Lydia. If I found out that someone I loved had delayed surgery that had even a small chance of saving their life just to say goodbye to me, I would be furious.)

Totally! It would royally suck not to get to say goodbye, but if there's a tiny chance you might live, have the damn surgery. That was very odd to me.
    • Phew! I'm glad to know someone else felt that way! I mean, it would be very sad not to be able to say goodbye, but even sadder to say goodbye, then have the person die, and know it was because they had delayed....
  • H50

I'm poking my head out of my cave to say that Danny found Matt at the end because the charter company gave him a passenger list (I'm not sure if that's the correct term), and Danny recognized the name that Matt used as, I think, one of their grade school teachers.

Steve most certainly lied to the feds, but when Danny first talked to Matt about it, he said that he had been contacted by a friend at the SEC. I don't think he actually told Matt that the feds were right there.

And I've loved reading the codas. Some of them are outstanding.
    • Re: H50

thanks! I must have been so choked up by Danny's sad face that I wasn't paying proper attention!

Though even Danny saying that he'd been contacted by a friend at the SEC was enough to let Matty know the game was up -- he found a way to let him know without technically breaking his word to the feds.

I've read at least one gorgeous coda too!
