Danny
Oh dear, I think this is why I usually post something right after the episode finishes. Because then I don't feel like I have to respond to anyone else's opinions--nor do I know how unpopular my own opinions are...

Oh well, I quite liked the episode, though it was a return to full-on early season ridiculousness--and to crazy-motherfucker!Steve (not BAMF!Steve, just crazy-motherfucker!Steve)--but with added angst. EW recently called him a talking surfboard (to which I thought, yeah, but that's one surfboard I'd like to ride)--but here he was a walking surfboard with soul.

But, ridiculous maguffins FTW, huh? When Jenna said she'd figured out what the key was for, I was sure she was going to say it was for an eighteenth-century music box stolen by the Nazis, and she had some contacts in the FBI's White Collar division she could call. Because seriously, it approached that level of "huh"? A bureau? (a word that AOL seemed to have strange difficulty with). It was, as Danny thankfully pointed out, as if someone had been watching too many episodes of Antique Road Show.

Otherwise, however, I spent the episode loving Jenna. Her little reactions of "huh, I didn't realize y'all were quite that crazy" every time some new piece of the season was recapped for her were gold. And necessary, since Danny, who had been playing that role, was waist-deep in the Great Grimpen Mire of Angst and WTF-ery this time.

(if anyone had an icon of Jenna making that face, please point me towards it!).

I can't get quite as upset about the adultery as many people are. It's not right, it's not cool. But it happens. All the time. To good people making bad decisions as much as to conniving amoral people. I'd actually wager that it happens more often, and with less severe consequences then, say, ninja-ing your way into the homes of elected officials, or setting off grenades in small, locally owned businesses. (and no, I'm not saying that out of some kind of "who's less immoral" wank--I'm just saying it).

Okay--enough unpopular opinions. Otherwise: I agree that Steve was hot as hell in his I'm-taking-people-down-with-my-thighs-again angst; I also agree that the insta-pregnancy plotline was annoying--and a narrative corner I can't quite imagine the writers getting out of without recourse to the lovely conspiracy theories I've seen this morning; and, yeah, no way did Chin flip on Steve or anyone else--the guy's middle name (heck, his first name) is loyalty--he's just working the inside.

Oh--and the eggs. Steve hates the way Danny makes eggs (though he's been pretending to like them). Danny has been making eggs for Steve every weekend, right?

  • I agree on Chin, he's definitely working the inside angle. I agree on Steve's hotness. I agree with thinking the pregnancy is stupid. I also agree that people cheat, and come back to their exes when they know it's not the wise thing to do (I have done it, after all).

I don't like that they slapped the whole Danny/Rachel thing in the last two episodes. All the other plotlines have run longer, with clues and stuff. Before 1.23 we had no idea Stan and Rachel had difficulties and then suddenly they're sleeping together and she's pregnant and she wants to go back to NJ and I was like 'WOAH SLOW DOWN'.

The rest, I can deal with. I just wish we have had more clues on the Rachel and Danny thing. It bothers me.

Also, wtf happened to Sang Min.
    • Yeah, if there are people out there who haven't been on one side or the other the cheating thing, or made bad choices with their exes--well, more power to them, I suppose.

OMG--Sang Min--You're right! Major plot point left hanging from last week. Plus, I kind of love him and his hair....

I can totally see what you mean about how rushed the D/R was. Especially the pregnancy stuff...
  • Yeah, now that I've seen other reviews and thoughts on this episode, I'm leaning towards believing that Chin IS working the inside.
    • Yeah, considering how absolutely unwilling he's been to act for his own self-preservation all season (by taking the fall for his uncle), it's hard to see him acting selfishly now. Either he has a plan already, or he'll have one soon.
  • I agree with you about Chin and oh boy, yes, Steve is as hot as hell in this episode. The pregnancy story I don't like very much as it was just suddenly thrown in as if the writers suddenly thought....'Oops! The end of the season and no real romance. We know, we'll make Rachel pregnant!!'
Jenna was great. I loved her reactions to all the info about what H50 had done...she seemed to just love the madness!! And also Streve's comment about H50 being a benevolent dictatorship....soooo good.
Now can't wait for season 2 to see how Danny and Chin are going to get Kono and Steve out of this little spot of trouble!!
    • Oh yeah, that was a great line about the benevolent dictatorship!

And I don't know why writers think pregnancy story lines are a good idea--or even particularly romantic (though Danny was quite sweet with Rachel when she told him). Just messy, messy, messy and hard to get out of...

It does set up some great new team combinations for next season. And think Jenna is developing into an appealing character--amused, rather than freaked out by the 5-0 craziness!
  • I, too, am fond of CrazyMotherfucker!Steve. It makes a lot of sense given his life so far. And the fact that he really IS a superhuman killing machine -- although he didn't kill the security guards, he certainly was capable.

But, ridiculous maguffins FTW, huh? When Jenna said she'd figured out what the key was for, I was sure she was going to say it was for an eighteenth-century music box stolen by the Nazis, and she had some contacts in the FBI's White Collar division she could call.

Yes, that's about the level of everything that went on in this ep, so I should have been ready for it myself!! Even my husband laughed at your comment.*G*
    • I have an unreasonable fondness for him. And his flying thigh tackles.

Ha! You laugh because it's true! Between that and the "inconspicuous" boat-car...
  • Haha, about the music box (just finished watching S1 of White Collar and I was convinced they were going to kill off Rachel a la the White Collar finale). JENNA KNOWS ALL. Hey I want an icon that says that.

Agree with everything you said. LOL, that's one surfboard I'd wanna ride, good one.
    • You know, I was convinced from beginning to end that Rachel was going to die--maybe it was WC setting up an expectation?

      • I was 95% sure. When she arranged for Danny to meet her at the airport, I was like, oh no, that's it. He's going to show up and she's going to get blown up. Then when they showed her with Grace, um, well, I thought, nooooo, they won't kill Grace. I'm so relieved they didn't kill off Rachel, I wouldn't want to see Danny have to go through that.
        • me too! from the moment she appeared I was like, "oh, they look happy--she's a goner." And then I was like, "well, they've killed off one female character, can they really kill two?" Then they killed off a second female character (which I was actually pretty sad about) and I was like "wait, they can't kill three, right?"

So, unlike Kate, she'll survive til next season, at any rate....
  • I'd actually wager that it happens more often, and with less severe consequences then, say, ninja-ing your way into the homes of elected officials, or setting off grenades in small, locally owned businesses.

LOL, that's exactly what I was thinking!

Is there any question about Chin working for the inside?! I felt like this episode completely cleared up our collective angst over that. He told Steve about the money, initially turned down the job by telling the chief that H50 was his family now, warned Steve to get out because HPD was on its way, and then he immediately was all, BRB I'VE GOT SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO DO Y'ALL. He even told Danny during the arrest that there was nothing he could do. It didn't look like he was angry at Steve or Danny, just doing what he had to do.

I was about to say that I needed that egg fic, but didn't you already write it? XD
    • lol--I did feel quite validated by that egg conversation--Danny as egg-maker now being canon, n'all. :)

It was hard to believe that even Danny, in the heat of the moment, wouldn't believe that Chin knew what he was doing--so I guess people were taking their cue off him? It was quite striking to hear him Mirandize Steve, tho'--makes you realize how seldom they do that on the show...
  • Lol, the music box, that bloody thing gets around.

I honestly have no idea how Rachel had the time to have an affair and get pregnant. Last I heard she'd pretty much left Stan and was tentative friends with Danny again. Unless there were a few months between this episode and the last one.
    • Lol, the music box, that bloody thing gets around
hee! It's a mutating 18th-century decorative art maguffin--it changes shape like a TARDIS is supposed to. Maybe it is a TARDIS.

I know, the timing was bugging me too--I mean even if it happens on the first go, it takes at least a few weeks to actually realize you're pregnant, usually more...So, she hasn't been sleeping with Stan at all for months?....very huh???

  • Yeah, I get people's upset over the infidelity, but I'm not sharing the very little I've seen so far of the rage directed at her. It's not okay, but she said it was over with Stan, she hasn't been sleeping with Stan (because she seems very very sure it's Danny's baby) and no it's not right but as you said, good people screw up with this. And hello, Danny! It takes two to tango!

Hee, I really liked Jenna as this tiny spot of "uh, I just work here" while the team is pretty much imploding around her, the actress handled all her scenes gracefully. That was a nicely done counterpoint to the chaos.

OMG THE H50 TEAM WHAT HAS THE SHOW DONE OMG OMG OMG.

Okay, I know they'll fix things next season but hey, right now it's freaking out timez, yay.
    • I need a Jenna icon so badly now! Graceful is a good word for how the actress handled those scenes.

I'm kind of interested in how outraged people are by the adultery (outraged at both Danny and Rachel). It makes me feel kind of jaded. But having heard so many rl tales of it--both from people I consider scum, and from people I love and respect--and having lived through various versions of it myself--I...Well, sometimes it ends miserably, and sometimes things shake out okay, and it doesn't have much to do with being a good person or not...Very hard to know in this (fictional) case, and I was surprised the TPTB didn't kill Rachel straight off for daring to have a good time cheating on her husband with her ex....I guess we'll see.

In any case, I agree that it was all overshadowed by the angst of the team being in such trouble!!! *meep*
