So, I think I said I was going to watch less TV this week....Um, that turned out not to be so true.

Here, not in the order in which they aired, but in the order in which I watched them off itunes, are my reactions:

Hawaii Five-O 1.01:

You know how sometimes you just want to watch some big slabs of muscled beefcake mixing it up? Oh, right. As my friend K. reminded me last night, this is not a universal desire. But if you do, HI 50 was a pretty fine example of the species. The guy playing Steve McGarrett (whom everyone seems to recognize from somewhere else but me) seemed mostly a flinty-eye lummox, but I was very won over by Danno (especially when he had to rearrange his daughter's school pickup in the middle of a high speed chase), and, really, there can never be too much footage of Grace Park surfing (or really, of anyone surfing). I expect I'll be watching more.

SPN 6.01:

This will be brief, because SPN fandom is freaking me out lately. Someone anonymously flamed my spnroundtable this week, fer chrissakes, spewing vitriol at the authors rec'd (the comment was immediately deleted by the sensible and vigilant mods). Gives me the willies.

But I did enjoy 6.01. Which is to say, Dean's incredibly expressive face was a welcome sight after the impassivity noted above. What other show could make you cry with a fleeting shot of someone scrambling eggs? I know some stuff happened after that, but I was mostly going "bzuh???"--so I'm not going to even try to review it.

Also, I really liked Lisa--I liked the connection between JA and Cindy Sampson. I do not want her to go away and/or die.

Fringe 3.01:

Alright, so this was clearly the class act of the bunch. Talk about expressive faces! I could've watch Olivia driving around in a cab with that guy from The Wire (Andre Rojo?) for the whole episode. (And since they've already got Lance Reddick and now Andre Rojo, could Fringe just hire all the rest of the actors from The Wire?). Though I also enjoyed the heck out her punching guys in the neck.

nb: I was actually in one of the locations in this episode, the park where Olivia thinks Bell's company should be, when I was in Vancouver in August. So not New York!

Since I watched SPN and Fringe back to back, I'm now kind of jonesing for a xover fic in which Dean and Olivia silently emote at each other, while simultaneously being as tough as nails. And then go out and kick some ass.

House 7.01 is still languishing, and I'm waiting to watch Merlin 3.03 with my boys!
  • I liked Hawaii Five-0 also! I really wasn't expecting to, but I like all of the characters so far, and McGarrett and Danno had good chemistry. I especially love Scott Caan, who plays Danno. He was in Ocean's Eleven and I've always thought he was really funny.
    • I don't remember Scott Caan from Ocean's Eleven (which I saw ages ago), but I loved him in this too! I wasn't expecting to like it that much either, but I agree--good characters, good chemistry. And waves!
  • So sorry your post got flamed - how awful! :-(

But I'm glad you liked the episode. I enjoyed it for Dean, I did.

I should try and watch Fringe again. I don't think House is going to be on my play-list this year, and that gives me space for a new show.

Hope all is well with you and that you thoroughly enjoy Merlin. :)
    • Hey u! *waves*

Re: the flame: I figure, I put myself out there with the recs, I can face getting flamed, but it infuriated me that they (anonymous and presumably drunk person) went after the authors rec'd--since they hadn't asked to be put forward...

You might have been right about House, and it was a six-month crush for me too--we'll see if I get around to it. And Fringe has definitely improved since the first season. That said, I enjoy it a lot, but it tends towards the cold and brilliant rather than the sloppy and passionate (aka SPN at its best), so....

Hope all is well with you too!

  • I agree with all of your comments. Especially this one:

"Since I watched SPN and Fringe back to back, I'm now kind of jonesing for a xover fic in which Dean and Olivia silently emote at each other, while simultaneously being as tough as nails. And then go out and kick some ass."

I don't suppose you're feeling creative in this particular way are you? :D

BTW I never realized I had a Dean-cooking kink until that vrief shot. Also for some strange reason, I also loved the black short-sleeved shirt in the bbq shot even though it was a totally Jensen shirt as opposed to a dean shit. Maybe it was just all the arms.

I think I'm ready for Cas to come back now.
    • erm, dean "shirt"

I would like Lisa and Ben to meet Castiel and be equal parts charmed and weirded out by him. Just thinking out loud.
      • lol, I totally read "shirt" 'til you pointed it out!

I would like Lisa and Ben to meet Castiel and be equal parts charmed and weirded out by him. Just thinking out loud.

THIS! It's got to happen, right?
        • Sadly I don't think it will since they couldn't even fit in any kind of interaction between Lisa and Ben with Sam or Bobby besides a couple of weirded out looks.

But the potential is endless especially with Castiel. Can you imagine Dean and Ben trying to explain the appeal Little League baseball to Castiel or Lisa insisting that he take off his trench coat at the dinner table? Cas would just be impatient and awkward with all these human conventions but he'd play along because they are also Dean's family.

One of the worst things about this show is all the wasted potential because of the Samn'Dean only straight-jacket. Of course they are the primary focal point of the series, but why is so hard for them to develop any other relationships on the show.

Oh wait, they tried that with Dean and Cas and fandom had a meltdown. *eyeroll*

So now they're stuck manufacturing OCC conflict in order to keep that one relationship fresh. Except it's the same damned conflict as always but dressed in drag. It's so damned frustrating.

Er sorry. Didn't mean to go off on a rant. But I just found myself yearning to see more of Dean's life with Lisa and Ben instead that tiny taste we got off the top.
    • lol--I think Dean/Olivia would be an awesome vid--all woobie looks and fighting--which I have no capacity to do...

I've always thought the go-to pairing for that xover would be Dean/Peter or Dean-Peter (for the same reasons Peter works well with Olivia). I have a tiny bit of a fic to that effect on my hard drive, which has yet to see the light of day...

I loved that shirt too! Also (have we already discussed this?) the bare feet and the socked feet. And after so many seasons of Dean literally sleeping on top of the covers with his shoes on, how nice was it to see him get under the covers and snuggle (even if it was in a kind of angsty way)?
      • Heh! I always knew Dean would a snuggler if ever given half the chance.

And yes about the years of sleeping with his boots on. His poor toes must have loved being able to move and breath for a year.

Ooooh yes Dean/Peter or Dean-Peter would totally work for me. Or Dean/Olivia/Peter. I'm not so fussy really.

There's a fun Dean/Neal (WC) cross over series I'm reading right now. I don't quite buy the connection but I'm enjoying the extreme pretty in my head so I'm willing hand-wave.
  • You know how sometimes you just want to watch some big slabs of muscled beefcake mixing it up?

    YES!

And also, I can't even believe someone spewed on your recs post. Were they objecting to the theme? Oh, SPN fandom. Why.
    • You know how sometimes you just want to watch some big slabs of muscled beefcake mixing it up?

      YES!

*fist bump of solidarity* I think I'll be back for more on Monday!

Yeah, why indeed. I posted recs for solo!Dean fics (real classics mostly, like "The 1300 Days") and got a (presumably drunken) "fandom-is-unfair-to-Sam" flame. Like I said above: okay, I put myself out there with the post, so I can face being flamed, but it seemed nasty to go after the authors, who hadn't asked to be put out there at all...sigh. I just feel like saying, "it's the world-wide web, people--if you don't like something, something you do like is just a few clicks away..."

    • It really is that kind of fandom--or is turning into that kind of fandom--disheartening, either way...

If you get a chance, go back and watch the first ten minutes of 6.01--it was by far the best part--lots of uneasily-domestic-yet-adorable!Dean--including some lovely flashes of Dean with Ben--the rest--like I said: "bzhuh??"

Oh, I meant to try and watch Undercovers--when is it on? Is Boris the male lead? Or is that another show?

      *hugs you back*

        • I will make it point to watch! Wed. night, huh?

(in the end, there were a couple of awesome episodes of S5--including "The End"--but otherwise, yeah...and the fandom seems to get more toxic all the time...)
  • Someone anonymously flamed my [info]spnroundtable this week, fer chrissakes, spewing vitriol at the authors rec'd

Damnit, was that the one where you recced "Lazarus?" (Which by the way, thank you, I've been off LJ for most of September and had missed it). Because now I'd LOVE to know what they said! Unwarranted vitriol is the most delicious of all!

    • Of course! It was the list of my most favorite genre of solo!Dean fics, in which Lazarus always has an honored spot.

I can't remember exactly what they said, but it was along the usual (drunken) lines of "fandom is unfair to Sam." And questioned my taste because I'd concentrated on how well-written the fics were, instead of the much more important fact that they didn't have enough Sam. You, I think, were singled out for having made the unimaginable choice of starting to write Dean/Cas instead.

UGH! It makes me feel wary of putting people's fics out there when I rec!

(perhaps because of this provocation, I'm about to post a list of gen Castiel recs that will probably get me more flames).
      • You, I think, were singled out for having made the unimaginable choice of starting to write Dean/Cas instead.

ROFL, that's especially stupid considering I never wrote Sam/Dean, so it's not like I abandoned one slashy OTP for another. Besides, CASTIEL LOVES DEAN 4EVAH.

If anyone's upset with unfairness to Sam they ought to go flame Sera Gamble. In spite of her admiration for Jared's pecs she's done jack shit for his character.
        • So true!

The best point was made by yourlibrarian over at the mirror post on DW:

I don't know, there's a lot of things people can feel justifiably victimized for in life, but that your favorite character doesn't get enough fanfic (especially when he's a good looking young white guy) is not one of them.
